I don\u2019t. I think all dogs can be wonderful and admire all sizes, breeds and mixed mutts.\u00a0 My dog Rosy is a medium sized mix of Shetland Sheepdog, German Shepard and some unknown combination of hound. I love it when she offers her rarely heard long beagle-like howl.<\/p>\n<p>If you are one\u00a0of the many people that go back and forth in trying to decide if you want a small dog or a large one, you may also wonder if small dogs are better somehow.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6161\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6161\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dogs-dane-and-french-bulldog--300x213.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"213\" alt=\"Great Dane and French bulldog looking at one another\" class=\"wp-image-6161 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Dane and French Bulldog.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The answer is that there is only what is best for you \u2013 and what size dog may be a better match to live with considering your lifestyle and any physical, financial\u00a0or time limitations you may have. \u00a0\u00a0In this week\u2019s episode of the Raising Your Paws podcast, I spoke about 5 aspects about small dogs that will affect your caring for them \u2013 from expenses, to risk of injury, to their behavior, and what that means for you regarding training. Listen to the show below. You&#8217;ll want segment 3.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Here are some additional differences and characteristics of small breed dogs versus large ones.<\/p>\n<h3>Small Dogs:<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Take up less space in the home<\/strong>. If the available room in the home is a consideration for you, any other family members and the dog in order to co-habit peacefully without bumping into each other all the time,\u00a0 or if it would be preferable let\u2019s say, not to be knocked out of bed and relegated to sleep on the floor, while the large dog hogs the bed and takes up all the covers, a small dog may fit your space needs.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6162\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6162\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dog-pug-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"pug on a red couch\" class=\"wp-image-6162 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pug.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"attachment_6163\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6163\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dog-great-dane-couch--300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Great Dane sleeping on a couch \" class=\"wp-image-6163 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Dane.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\"><strong>Can\u2019t reach as high. <\/strong>Unless they literally leap their whole little body up onto the kitchen counter, they simply can\u2019t reach it, even standing on their hind legs. Of course this does not apply if you leave your sandwich on the low coffee table when you take a bathroom break from watching TV. As long as you don\u2019t leave tempting things on surfaces they can reach with paws or easily open low cabinets, you can worry less about them getting into things when they have free reign of the house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eat less. <\/strong>If you\u2019re feeding kibble, a 8 lb. bag of dog food can last a small dog a month. Large cans of dog food last through a number of meals. Since you are buying less food in total, you could\u00a0 consider spending a bit more for a higher quality dog food which makes for healthier dogs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Have cheaper medicines. <\/strong>Monthly flea\/tick, heart worm or other veterinary prescription medicines are usually cheaper for dogs that weigh less. Surgical procedures may also cost less for the smaller bodies. No guarantee here though \u2013 you would have to consult with the vet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make smaller messes. <\/strong>Some small dog breeds are not always as easy to house train as large dogs, but there is less to clean up. For instance, if a Burmese Mountain Dog pee\u2019s on the floor you have to get a janitor-sized mop and bucket to clean up the small pond of urine. When a Shih Tzu leaves a little piddle, you grab a paper towel.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6166\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6166\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dogs-burmese--300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"Burmese mountain dog in the snow.\" class=\"wp-image-6166 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Burmese Mountain Dog.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"attachment_6167\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6167\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dogs-shih-tzu-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6167 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shih Tzu.<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\"><strong>Easier to hold in arms and cuddle. <\/strong>There are plenty of large dogs that are very affectionate and will snuggle their bodies right up against you as you both lie down and relax on the couch or bed.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6168\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6168\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dogs-chihuahua-300x200.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" alt=\"man and Chihuahua on bed. \" class=\"wp-image-6168 alignleft size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6168\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chihuahau.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But unless it is a Great Dane who thinks they are lap dogs, smaller dogs generally enjoy and tolerate being held on your lap more traditionally. Rosy is not a cuddler. Sigh&#8230;&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Easier to walk.\u00a0<\/strong>A 12 lb dog isn\u2019t going to yank your arm out on a walk, no matter how much they pull. This is not a reason, however not to train them to walk nicely besides you on a loose leash. All dogs need to learn this skill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Are portable and more welcome.\u00a0<\/strong>It is fairly easy to get a little dog in the car and go visiting friends and family (as long as you ask if your dog can come over) or when traveling, on longer distance road trips. It\u2019s easier to fly with them as well, it being possible with some airlines to take in the airplane cabin with you if the dog is in carrier and placed under the seat in front of you. Some pet friendly motels\/hotels have some limits on how big your dog can be and many apartment or condo associations definitely have weight restrictions, only allowing dogs under 25 pounds to live there.<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_6169\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6169\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dogs-golden-doodle.-200x300.jpg\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6169 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Golden Doodle.<\/p><\/div><div id=\"attachment_6170\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6170\" src=\"https:\/\/raisingyourpaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/dogs-morkie--300x240.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" alt=\"Morkie sitting on a ottoman\" class=\"wp-image-6170 size-medium\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-6170\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Morkie ( a mix of a Yorkie and a Maltese)<\/p><\/div><\/p>\n<p style=\"clear: both;\"><strong>Live Longer. <\/strong>Small dogs have a longer lifespan than big dogs \u2013 some even living twice as long.
